Is SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) Causing Your Gut, Brain And Nervous System Issues?
Is it me, or do you think health is becoming… well, trendy?
There is so much information out there, so many gurus, and so many people jumping on the green juice-bone broth-kombucha bandwagon.
I love it.
It’s spreading the word like wildfire and things are changing.
What about Candida though – even if you are not a “health person” per se, you may have heard of Candida, right?
I was in a coffee shop last week and I overheard a girl next to me talking to her friend say “Ah, I can’t take a bite of that, my Candida is really acting up.” Lol.
I smiled, partly because it’s funny to hear that, and partly because everyone seems to know about it on some level.
These “organisms” that live in and on us all the time are really jockeying for our attention, and they are getting it.
We know that yeast overgrowth is responsible for a lot of trouble from bloating to constipation to low energy to brain fog.
But health is a complicated matter with many organisms working together (and these organisms can work together either for you or against you).
Enter, bacteria.
Is Bacterial Overgrowth At The Root Of Your Health Issues?
Since we have about 10 times more bacterial cells than we have human cells, we must talk about bacteria and not just yeast alone because you almost never find one without the other.
After taking two large groups and a clinical trial totaling almost 5,000 people through Gut Thrive in 5, I’ve become intimately familiar and acutely aware of a condition that plagued more than 1,000 of these people and millions of others (potentially you on some level).
That condition is SIBO, which stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
What Exactly Is SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)?
We have bacteria in our small intestine, which is the place where you digest your food, but we have an infinitely higher number of bacteria in the colon (the large intestine).
SIBO can be defined simply as having a bacterial overgrowth of many different types of bacteria that belong in the large intestine in the small intestine.
And when bacteria are in the wrong place, this wreaks havoc on our health.
Bacteria In The Wrong Place Can Lead To The Following Health Issues:
- Intestinal permeability (leaky gut syndrome)
- Liver overload
- Immune trouble
- And potentially brain toxicity
This often goes unchecked for years on end, because it's not truly recognized in the mainstream medical community.
SIBO significantly impacts our digestion of food and absorption of nutrients (because it damages the gut lining).
Those Plagued With SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) Often Experience:
- Trouble digesting most carbohydrates (FODMAPS)
- Many food sensitivities (what can I eat??)
- Constant, excessive bloating
- Brain fog
- Exhaustion (from being undernourished and not digesting your food)
- Long-standing, stubborn constipation
- Depression and anxiety (the gut, the brain & the nervous system are a team)
- Vitamin A or Vitamin D deficiency
A Few Things That Can Cause SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth):
- Antibiotic use (sometimes even just 2 or 3 rounds of antibiotics)
- Inadequate stomach acid (see how to avoid that here)
- Overconsumption of alcohol, sugar, birth control pills, or NSAIDs (anti-inflammatories)
- Digestive diseases like Celiac, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis
- Irritable bowel syndrome
How To Get Rid Of SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) Naturally
The mission to eradicate SIBO can be complicated and requires a multi-pronged approach.
But it absolutely can be done with system and strategy and customization along the way, based upon how you respond to the strategy.
Here is my 10-step approach of how we like to kick SIBO for good in our Gut Thrive in 5 Program.
10 Steps For Getting Rid of SIBO Naturally:
1: Slash inflammation by removing food sensitivities and things that proliferate bacteria (this includes all fermented foods, even the ones you think are good for you). At the same time, add in amazingly tasty, powerful foods as your antibacterial (and anti-yeast) medicine.
2: Build the adrenals and thyroid so you have energy for steps 3-10. Take enzymes so you can digest your food and avoid deficiency.
3: Purge pathogens with a carefully crafted cocktail of botanicals that interrupt the way these “super bacteria” communicate. If you take away their “cell phones,” they can no longer talk and proliferate and we can get to moving them on out.
4: Keep bacteria moving down and out. We use salt flushes to keep the bacteria moving down (since it’s tendency is to come UP and cause problems). Follow your salt flush with a coffee enema and they know they really need to find someplace to live.
5: Close the ileocecal valve. This is the “border check” valve that keeps the microbial ecosystem of your colon separate from your small intestine. A lazy or flimsy valve is going to ensure the problem persists by letting bacteria up and into the small intestine where it doesn’t belong.
6: Implement neuro-activation techniques like gargling, singing, and deep breathing that wake up the brain to remember its role in intestinal motility. This helps alleviate constipation from one of the root causes.
7: Heal and seal leaky gut with food and dip your toe back in the water of good bacteria, to see if probiotics will now help or hurt.
8: Balance stomach acid to make sure you don’t get bacterial overgrowth again.
9: Build your long-term gut health and make the good bacteria especially strong and self-sufficient to make your own vitamins again and to keep you balanced.
10: Employ the 80/20 principle. Live a balanced, healthy life because now your body has developed the ability to adapt and survive and you can employ the 80/20 to eat clean 80% of the time.

I have had sulphur belches before about 12 yrs. ago, I was on Vicodin then. I have had a lot of surgeries. I stopped the medication and did not know what was going on. Recently I took tramadol for pain, and the belches started again, and I immediately stopped medication, and started looking up my symptoms, and found out I might have SIBO, and believe it or not, that was somewhat a healer in itself. I also took steroids for cysts in my parotid glands, and was prescribed a lot and I feel that also contributed to my situation. I am a Diabetic, and 68, had 7 children and 8 surgeries since 1994. I am disabled, but I walk a lot and am active. Thank you for your site, you have helped me immensely, but I do need to go to the doctor, and get on a good diet. I have been following the SIBO suggestions for diet and it seems to be helping, but you never know. Not afraid to eat, but I don’t want it to get that far, and want to start healing. Kathleen Erbe. Thank you all so much.
Knowledge is power, Kathleen. We hope the information we share along with the rest of what you are discovering is helping you understand where to start and where to go for further healing. Our 5Gut Thrive in 5 program has a plan designed for those with SIBO so please check it out and if you have any questions about the process contact our support team and they will be happy to assist you. You can write to them at [email protected].
Thank you so much. Kathleen Erbe
Diagnosed with SIBO about a month ago.of course, two different antibiotics subscribed. Did not help — Dr. wants me to take XIFAXAN but it is to expensive. Not feeling good at all. Confused and do not know what to do.
Hi Katy, I genuinely think our Gut Thrive in 5 program can be an answer for you. It takes longer than doing a round of antibiotics and is likely much more expensive but the long-term repercussions of not healing it are great and ultimately more costly in terms of quality of life and financially. Why don’t you watch our webinar HERE to at least gain a greater understanding of your microbiome, how you got SIBO and the correct approach to eliminate it and then email us if you have questions [email protected].
Can you elaborate on the process for doing a salt flush?

After having worked with clients for over 30 years and having worked with comprehensive stool tests (20 years) as well as SIBO breath tests (5 years), I can tell you that many people in fact do have yeast-related issues. While it is correct that many have SIBO (especially positive hydrogen results) an incredible amount of people today have parasites and in addition, testing results with many people has revealed various kinds of yeast inside their GI tract. Perhaps one of the most common clinical findings in the past 10 years I’m finding however, is a serious lack of beneficial bacteria species in many, particularly the Lactobacillus as well as Bifidobacterium species. Comp. stool testing is well worth the investment as it can reveal many different potential digestive tract problems. It is an invaluable clinical tool I simply couldn’t work without.
Hi,my name is Mike,im going on my second year of being treated by 2 different natural pathic Doc,but im still having trouble with my GI track.Ive never hade a Comprehensive Stool test done,to actually pin point, rather i have yeast Candida,or Sibo, but i have been having problems, digesting Carbs,so i came too the conclussion, that ive had Sibo, the whole time!this all startede,a year and a half, after i had H Pylori, for the second time in my life, and was given a triple Antibiotics, called Prev Pack.Symptoms came back,so i got retested, results was negetive. Doctors offered no more help,so i seeked out a ND.Second ND has helped me tremendousely, but niether one of my ND,offered me a Comprehensive Stool test. I live in Rochester New York, was wondering where you are located, mybe you could help me out,let me no please, and thanks so much, your blog gave me a different insite,on my Stomach issues!
How do I get an appointment?
Hi Johnny, We don’t take appointments to see clients but our customer support team can help answer any questions you have about our programs. Please contact them at [email protected].
My daughter was diagnosed with sibo and then went on the formap diet to starve the bacteria. Nowtheproblem is every time she goes off the formap diet she gets terrible inflammation pain. What can she do to be able to eat normal again
This is exactly what is going on with me. It’s Candida but based on a stool test, it’s overgrowth in my small intestine. Do you have a more formal program, or just what is listed above? I had never heard that I shouldn’t snack. I’m definitely doing that now after reading this!
Hi Karsten, If you have SIBO Gut Thrive in 5 is the most comprehensive approach to overcoming it and healing from the root cause. Click this link to learn more https://thewholejourney.com/programs/gut-thrive/gt-enroll-now/?cfid=3. Stacey, Team TWJ
Your plan sounds different from others, how do I get specifics on salt flush? I have been doing coffee enemas w/o to much success, maybe I was missing the salt flush! Does your cocktail on killing overgrowth of candida constipate or do you need laxatives to flush it out? Im 53, so tired of failing at these diets maybe this might do the trick!
Hi Julie, Our program material includes instructions for doing a salt flush as well as a very specific supplement protocol. The Sludgy Cocktail can cause constipation, but we address ways to prevent that. The unique 5 Step strategy Christa uses in the Gut Thrive in program has helped many people heal from SIBO. Hi Debra,
I tried 2 rounds of antibiotic and it returned. I tried Atrantil, a herbal antibiotic and it worked just as well as xifaxin but it it came back. Anyway, Atrantil is good for keeping symptoms at bay. You can buy it online.
Hello, I once was able to download a 20 page or so protocol using diatomaceous earth to kill candida. Do you have that still available?
Hi Vero, That information is available within the Kick Candida for Good program. Christa is hosting a special webinar tonight at 5pm PST to discuss overcoming candida and healing leaky gut. Click this link to register for the online event: https://thewholejourney.com/kick-candida-for-good-webinar/. Hope you can join us!
Hello, I’m a member of your candida, and your gut 5 in five program, and in was half way through the gut 5 (sibo) program and was doing great, when in one day i got sick.

I’m desprate

I’ve never seen anyone say “my SIBO is cured, I can eat like I used to”, and I bet you have not either. The best improvement I have received is from strong vigorous massage of my stomach area. Hinting SIBO might be due to adhesions in the digestive systems. Just a guess, but I improve a lot when I massage.
Hi Kevin, Sure SIBO can absolutely be cured and lab tests will show that. Of course we don’t really want to go back to “eating like we used to” if we were eating poor quality food. Happy to hear you’ve had success with digestive massage!
Can I get the recipe for the salt flush
Thank you
Like many of you I suffer from SIBO and I’m at loss with traditional medicine… I saw your program and seems to be effective but a bit expensive especially when I’ve spent so much already on doctors, tests, medication, etc… Would it be possible to talk to some of the poeple that went through this program and see how it helped them? and why this program vs. others? Thank you so much

Pls provide to me the ingredients to do a salt flush? I’ve SIBO.
Hi Debra, If you do a quick online search on salt flushes you’ll easily find a recipe with instructions. Thank you! ~Stacey, TWJ Team Member.
I’m currently in the process of trying to heal leaky gut & SIBO in hopes of clearing up psoriasis. Have you had any one go through you program & report that they were also able to clear up their psoriasis?
Hi Ana, Our Gut Thrive customers who suffer from psoriasis have experienced much success improving their condition. Here’s the dilemma. Your current microbiome is supporting the inflammatory and hyperkeratotic processes that epigenetically lock you into a psoriasis. Recent research shows several “perfect storm” pathogens that cause this from the intestines. If the pathogens are present, then they reinforce the unwanted symptom-expression. So you’ve got to change that, one way or another. Changing the microbiome can exacerbate symptoms such as yours, but it should be a temporary exacerbation. So GENTLE and GRADUAL are key. A happier microbiome means less inflammation. Also, getting rid of the offending pathogens does not guarantee an end to the symptom-expression, because the body often continues the epigenetic expression of the symptoms until “acted upon by another force.” That other “force” is the domain of your Naturopath who can provide nutrients, homeopathics, botanicals, and therapies to assist once your microbiome is rejuvenated. Gut Thrive in 5 is a great first step to true healing.~Stacey, TWJ Customer Support Team Member (KB Article)
What if people are so sensitive (myself) and cannot tolerate coffee (organic fresh ground) enema. When I tried many yrs ago, so very stimulating, did not sleep for 5 days in a row, zero sleep. Many things (foods, herbs, supplements, etc act as excitotoxins, that being said, I take soooo many supplements etc. Is there an alternative to coffee enema? Likely SIBO (all the symptoms), Hashi, lupus, Raynaulds Disease,Celiac. Loosing weight, when I need to build muscle and keep weight on. Take probably too many enzymes (fear I am loosing my ability to produce any enzymes on my own, and take many probiotics as well (recently added s boulardi). I see a few people have done the triple approach (2 diff antibiotics, PPI) without lasting results. Botanicals ie goldenseal could be part of the plan, but someone could very easily react adversely to certain botanicals. If everyone’s problem is very individual, with all due respect, how can one possibly adjust the protocol to fit their personal needs, for ie, coffee enema; another one is iodine, many people are sensitive (often due to insufficient selenium, but must be careful with selenium too). What happens if someone gets into a crisis state, is there a contact that you can call, different time zones? How far does the support staff go in terms of something like this happening? How are these indications sufficiently monitored with an on-line protocol, and there are so many of them? Do you suggest for certain people to get certain tests done from their dr. ie antibodies starting out?
Thank you, Best, Dolores
Hi Dolores,
You’re right,There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution for digestive health. Healing your gut requires more than just taking supplements and eating different foods. It requires the right holistic approach. You need to know exactly what is causing your problems and then have a well-defined, effective, yet simple strategy to heal. In our new Gut Thrive in 5™ program, we share this proven, scientific 5-Step method for rejuvenating your entire digestive system.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to watch Christa’s video on the Gut Thrive in 5 program http://www.gutthrivein5.com/fr…. I think most of your questions and concerns will be alleviated after watching the video.
It’s no problem at all if you cannot do coffee enemas and they are not required for success. Our supplement kit includes Trifala which will help with constipation and we include many other modalities that don’t require physical exertion as well as neuro-activation techniques to stimulate the Vagus nerve. So with all the tools GT5 offers, you will certainly find ones that work for you. We incorporate castor oil packs in the preparation phase and often that is enough to get the pipes flowing.
It is important to note:
This program is for individuals who understand this is an on-line program that includes many people going through a healing process together. All the participants involved in the Gut Thrive™ may be going through the program at a different pace and take into account that everyone may be at different stages in the program.
Our responsive and passionate Customer Service team will be on-line to answer your questions that relate to the program and help you to move forward throughout the program. Many answers are available within the Q&A of the webinars and throughout the Knowledge Base which includes over 1000 articles related to Gut Thrive and all areas of gut health.
For those of you who want more personalized attention or need your plan more customized for your individual needs, you’ll have an opportunity to book a private 30-minute consult with our special guest, Jack Tips, CN, PhD. The sessions will be offered, but not required through Gut Thrive in 5™, and will be available at a discounted rate to participants. All session will be on a first-come, first-serve basis (limited sessions available). Questions on lab work will be deferred to your private health practitioner.
If you have anymore questions, please write to our customer support team at [email protected].
Kindly,
Stacey

I have had SIBO and Candida and stage 2/3 Adrenal Fatigue for almost 7 years now. My biggest complaint is bloating constantly (looks like I’m 6 months pregnant), unable to eat ANYTHING without reacting to it, major fatigue and muscle weakness, making it impossible to exercise. I’m only 29 and it feels like this disease has robbed most of my 20’s. I have worked with Naturopaths, regular doctors, Gi specialists, and Homeopaths and nothing has put a big dent in this ailment for me. I have done MANY Candida cleanses and SIBO treatments (natural AND chemical) and have been on strict SCD for about 3 years. Also tried cutting out nightshades and high-fodmap foods. Also cut out “allergy” foods (dairy, eggs, nuts, and limited butternut squash). So I’m literally left to eating meat, zucchini, and carrots. I’ve been eating this everyday for the past 6 months and I’m still experiencing symptoms. I’ve even tried the Elemental Diet TWICE and added prokenetics and a whole comprehensive post-SIBO protocol, but it quickly came back. I’m on all the right, high-quality, expensive supplements including Betaine HCL, digestive enzymes, probiotics, vitamins, omega, digestive bitters, licorice root, etc. And I also practice meditation and see a therapist. I am completely flabbergasted. My question is, how is your program any different than what I’ve already done? I’m also a bit underweight, so how could I gain it back? Would this be something that would happen after the program (if it worked)?
I should also note that I’ve had H-Pylori, parasites of various kinds, and hormonal imbalances.
Hey Marissa – your situation sounds extremely similar to mine. I am a 19 year old female who has been bloating like I’m pregnant and malnourished and underweight, all because of taking an antibiotic I ended up reacting too. Turns out I have sibo, probably candida too, and this disease has damaged my immune system so much that my scoliosis is worsening, my uterus is being crushed under so much pressure from intestinal bloating I suffer from pelvic problems, and so many other symptoms…
If you haven’t tried it yet, I would recommend a combo of 5 astralugus root tablets a day (very important), apple cider vinegar tablets, one table spoon of baking soda and flaxseed oil twice a day for at least 6 months. and see if it helps your bloating get better. It helps mine but it is far from a cure, still it might help with bloating, I found my stomach to be much flatter on this protocol although not perfect… if it works for you it should help within 3 weeks.
Hi Marissa,
I am so sorry you are going through this. I am in a very similar situation to you – I have Sibo, H-Pylori and all I can eat is meat, salmon and squash. Did you end up doing the Whole Journey? If so, was it helpful?
Thanks in advance,
Danielle
Also- Just saw how incredibly expensive your program is. I’m hoping it includes all the supplements you’re recommending?
Please visit http://www.gutthrivein5.com to see what’s included in the progam. Have a great day!
Hi Marissa, We commend you for your journey and know it’s likely been a long, taxing road. Most of our clients have said the same thing. Gut Thrive in Five is different because the assessment is unprecedented, with the formulas being customized and more holistic than any other approach out there. Plus we approach the WHOLE person, not just the physical body.
Our program reconnects you to your original genetic blue print and therefore gives your own body the chance to reach its inherent genetic potential and to “turn off” disease. We hold your hand with over 40 years of combined clinical experience and a step-by-step approach that is easy to follow, with food that tastes good and doesn’t take forever to prepare.
We get deep inside your mind and heart to make sure you create a beautiful lifestyle for yourself that you can be proud of and that you can follow without having to think so hard about it. We are exceptionally proud of this groundbreaking program. There is nothing else out there like it, and we believe this process will revolutionize not only your own life, but also health care.
I know this is an old thread Marissa but if you are still suffering I would cut out the probiotic!!
Hello,
I watched your segment on the Fat Loss Summit and was particularly interested in this topic. Over the past three years I have been diagnosed with leaky gut, early onset adrenal fatigue, Hashimoto’s, and hypothyroidism. My main complaints are weight gain and fatigue. Plus, I’ve had several food sensitivity panels done and each one comes back with different foods so I’m a nervous wreck about what I should eat. I recently switched naturopaths And she had a stool sample done. It came back that there were three different kinds of parasites including Blastocystis hominis and two others. What do I do???
I have been fighting what the doctors have been calling gerd for 15 years. Been to so many gi doctors and spend thousands and thousands with no relief. I get such bad chest pains it feels like a heart attack. Been to er too many times, been admitted too many times all for nothing. They give me ppi’s and a cocktail and send me home. The last gi I went to did a breath test to check for SIBO and said it is positive so he wants me to take this antibiotic that sounds very dangerous from what I have read on it. I’m trying to take care of this all natural. I want to start probiotics and enzimes. He also said he wants to test me for lactose and fructose intolerance. 0lease help me. I don’t know what to do. Had gallbladder removed three years ago. Now also have bad headachs and earach and back pains to go with all this other sickness. Oh been on ppi’s for 15 years also. Thank you.

Marilyn, take an hour to watch the gut healing webinar (it’s free) and will explain the root of you’re ongoing (and unnecessary) GERD. freeguthealthwebinar.com. There is another way besides antibiotics – which at this point doesn’t sound like it will provide any long-term solution for SIBO and could worsen the GERD by further degrading the mucosal lining and adequate stomach acid production. Watch the webinar and then go from there with your decisions with more information under your belt.
I have a lot of bloating and digestive issues but it’s complicated by abdominal adhesions. Do you have any suggestions on how to get rid of adhesions and would your gutthrivein5 program help
Hi Nat. Yes absolutely. We’ve helped lots of Gut Thrivers with adhesions and it works for them because our process is gentler than almost anything out there so it won’t be inflammatory. Proteolytics and a non-inflamed intestinal terrain help with adhesions considerably. I just put together a webinar for you guys that you watch about the whole experience you’ll go through in Gut Thrive at freeguthealthwebinar.coom
HI Christa, thanks so much for the work you do! If one has candida and SIBO as well. Which one should one treat first? Thank you!
Hi Moco – you treat them at the same time. Watch my free gut healing webinar at freeguthealthwebinar.com and I will show you how you treat Candida and SIBO (and simultaneously get rid of heavy metals and protozoa, etc while repairing gut lining) at freeguthealthwebinar.com
That was great – you did pack in the info! You are a master at dealing with very little time & with pressure from your coworkers, lol!!
Lol, thanks Em. Gotta maximize it. 😉
I’ve struggled with chronic constipation, gas (both ends) and bloating, terrible brain fog and headaches along with low levels of anxiety and depression and on and off skin rashes, to name a few symptoms, my whole life. I have such dark circles under my eyes. I’ve worked to try to figure out if I have candida, SIBO or something else going on. I’m wondering if I’d have to have a diagnosis before taking the Gut Thrive in 5.
Hi Janet. You are the perfect GT5 candidate because you most likely are also very tired and have adrenal fatigue and a sluggish thyroid. In GT5 we’ll work to give you more energy before going into the full process. Dark circles are a negative liver response to a food (food sensitivities). GT5 will work on ALL aspects of gut health systematically so we’ll tackle candida and SIBO simultaneoulsy as well as all other pathogens and leaky gut. No diagnosis or prior lab work needed to join GT5. We do all of all for you with our sophisticated assessment process. Perhaps you’ll want to watch my free Gut Thrive Experience webinar so you can truly understand what it will entail for you. You can do that freeguthealthwebinar.com
I have SIBO with at least 4 recurrences with severe diarrhea. Have had xifaxiin and herbal antibiotics from a naturopath as needed. My last dr has given me biocidin to take but has still recurred. I understand this is a vagal issue. Would the coffee enemas still work since I don’t have constipation? This has been an ongoing issue for about 6 years. The gastroenterologist even did a CT. (Ugh) which didn’t show anything. I understand this is a fairly new diagnosis but even with the scd diet it has reoccurred and I have suffered. Any suggestions besides the gargling? Thank you
Hi Norma. Have a look at our Gut Thrive process on how to heal this. I layout all 5 steps here. Unfortunately there are a lot of GI docs and naturopathic docs who can’t seem to make progress with SIBO because it’s stubborn, but our gentle yet powerful approach is proving incredibly effective. Here’s the page you’ll want to read “cover to cover” gutthrivein5.com
How can we find Functional Practitioners in our local area?
You can look on http://functionaldiagnosticnutriton.com/ or https://www.functionalmedicine.org/
I’ve been treating Candida and SIBO for a few years now and can’t seem to get my gut healed. Would love to hear more about complex cases and how you treat multiple issues like gut issues along with MTHFR, adrenal issues, hormone imbalance. I know its a cascade effect.
You are THE perfect candidate for Gut Thrive in 5 Loretta. It will change your life. We address is all – MTHFR and other genetic mutations where folks have trouble detoxifying and clean up entire gut-microbiome, the liver, and help you make your way toward hormonal balance. Hope you can take time to watch my webinar which comes out Thursday as it will pull it all together for you. My 13 year old son has SIBO. He is already on a grain free, dairy free, low-FODMAP diet, but he still gets tummy aches (but no constipation). When he was diagnosed his doctor put him on a course of antibiotics. They helped for about a week but now he is in pain again. What can be done to help him? He is a growing boy (nearly 6 foot already) and is always hungry and with his food limitations I am always running out of food I can give him!
Your son is a PRIME candidate for Gut Thrive, Katie.
